HOMETOWN: TRURO, CORNWALL
“My ultimate goal is simple, and that is to compete in the Vendee Globe in a competitive team and boat. To do this I must develop the necessary solo offshore skills in the Figaro class where the top Vendee Globe skippers hone their skills so that I can fulfil my dream!”
Robin Elsey first learned how to sail at the Restronguet Sailing Club in his native Cornwall. He started out, like any other sailor, in an Optimist before moving into Toppers where he began competitive sailing. He moved up through the RYA’s Junior and Youth Racing Programmes finishing in a Laser Standard. Robin represented GBR in Junior and Youth European and World Championships along the way.
He started yacht racing with the British Keelboat Academy, before being chosen by the Artemis Offshore Academy as one of the part-time sailors in the Development Squad, which he joined in 2012. He stayed as a part-time sailor throughout 2013 and 2014.
In 2015 Robin made it to the Development Squad, and competed in all major event, getting very good results as a rookie. He finished 15th overall and 1st rookie of the 2015 Solitaire Bompard Le Figaro.
He started his 2016 season at the Transat AG2R La Mondiale with fellow Artemis alumni Sam Matson, finishing 6th overall after 22 days at sea. In his first solo race of the season - the Solo Normandie - Elsey ranked 7th. In the 2016 Le Havre Allmer Cup, his last race before the Solitaire, he finished 17th.
In the 2016 Solitaire - Bompard Le Figaro, Robin finished 25th.
