After being selected to join the ranks of the Artemis Offshore Academy in September 2012 Ed whole-heartedly threw himself into the baptism of fire that was learning to sail solo on the one-design Figaro Bénéteau II. Relocating to France in late November, sacrifices were made and normality became a thing of the past, with Ed leaving behind not only a house and a job, but also a very patient fiancée.
After a steep learning curve at the start of the 2012 season in the Figaro Bénéteau class Hill began to find his feet and readied himself for the 2013 La Solitaire du Figaro race. Lining up against fellow Academy sailors; Henry Bomby, Jack Bouttell, Nick Cherry and Sam Goodchild, Ed finished the 2013 edition of the race in 32nd place.
2013 would see Hill line up for his second time on the La Solitaire du Figaro start line, this time racing in aid of the Macmillan Cancer support charity. Following a very tough and demanding race Ed could not better his 2013 result finishing the 2014 race in 36th place.
